The Homebirth Association of BC began
in 2001 in response to the prosecution of Gloria Lemay, Traditional
Birth Attendant, by the BC College of Midwives. We stand for the right
of each family in the province of B.C.to choose who will attend their
homebirth. We believe that birth is an important event in the life of
a family and should be regarded as private and sacred.
The BC College of Midwives has brought various legal proceedings against
Gloria Lemay for the past 3 years in an attempt to remove her from assisting
childbearing women, even though her services are in more demand now
than they were before the creation of the College of Midwives by the
B.C. government in 1998.
As consumers of birth services, we are committed to
maintaining as many options as possible for homebirth families. Government
paid and controlled midwives are often not able to meed the needs of
families whose greatest wish is to remain away from the hospital during
the birth process and to avoid medical interventions.
