Questions to ask your Midwife or Private Birth Attendant

It is essential that you interview your prospective midwife or private birth attendant before choosing the right person for you and your family.

The best way to choose a midwife is by talking to friends, LLLeague leaders, prenatal educators, etc in your community and get a sense of what people liked or didn't like about their care. What community are you in? When you meet midwives, ask them for references and ask to see videos of births they have assisted with.

Important questions to ask:
1. What will happen if I go overdue?
2. Do you use doppler ultrasound to check the baby's heart beat? Why/why not?
3. Will I know who is the midwife for my birth in advance?

4. What is your rate of hospital transport?
5. What newborn procedures do you recommend and why?
6. If you cannot attend my birth for any reason, who will you send?
7. How many birth have you attended?

These questions will give you an idea about the midwife's philosophy and ease with the subject matter.
